2 Days in Lecce

27 Sep

I arrived in Lecce by train on Sunday morning to meet up with my tour group. 2 women from California, one from North Carolina, and our leader, Studentessa Matta, Melissa. We are staying in a beautiful suite hotel in the historical center of Lecce.

Lecce is a city of over 100 churches. We took a walking tour of the city and visited several of the Baroque style.

From Bari to Polignano A Mare

23 Sep

Thursday, Holly and I traveled to Bari, a large shipping and industrial city on the Adriatic coast. We did this because Holly had an early flight up to Venice to meet her husband and friends. However, for me, it was crazy stressful driving on unmarked streets. The best part was visiting Eataly , which was beautiful and much larger than the New York one, however the restaurants were closed and we were only able to get prosciutto crudo alla barese. Or thick, tough ham with lots of fat.

So much for Bari, probably wont return there. I took Holly to the airport on Friday and i took the train to the seaside town of Polignano A Mare, where I stayed for 2 nights in the Old Town. Very picturesque, built on the side of the cliffs.

Matera and the Sassi

21 Sep

Tuesday we rented a car and left Sorrento to travel to Matera in the Basilicata Region in the middle of southern Italy. We passed through small towns to the Autostrada. I thought New Yorkers were crazy drivers! We arrived in Matera in the late afternoon to our cave room in the Sassi, the very old part of Matera where people loved in caves until the 1960’s.

Matera is beautiful. Unlike anything I have seen in Italy. Not much English spoken here. Still undiscoverd by American tourists.

Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast

18 Sep

We rented a 2 bedroom apartment outside of the tourist area. On the first day we traveled to Pompeii to see the city that was destroyed by volcanic ash.

The weather has been beautiful and hot. On Sunday, we took the ferry to Capri to meet Antonio for a boat ride around the island. We went into beautiful caves. Holly drove the boat.

Monday brought another hot day and due to the large amount of tourists in Sorrento, we had a hard time getting on a bus down the Amalfi Coast. Finally we got one at 1:00. We visited Amalfi and Positano.
